Do you accrue enough or too little pension?

One in three Dutch receive less pension than anticipated upon reaching the retirement age. There is also a group that saves more than sufficiently, according to research institute Netspar. To which group do you belong?

Did you possibly save too little pension?

There are 7 groups at risk for a lower pension than expected. Does one of the following situations apply to you? Then you would do well to check well in advance of your retirement how your pension is doing. This concerns the following groups:

1. Self-employed

Almost half of the self-employed take measures for an additional pension, but more than half do not do so.

2. Flex-workers

Are you temporarily without a job or do you work less? That automatically means a gap in accrual of your pension. Are you working only a short time for an employer? Then you accrue only a small pension. Pension funds may pay out this pension as one-off payment after 2 years. Incidentally, you can avoid this by taking your pension with you if you change jobs.

3. Disabled workers

52% of the disabled workers have a reduced size pension. They are entitled to a WIA benefit, but based on this benefit, they do not accrue a pension. Workers who have become disabled (fully or partly) during a situation of employment are often entitled to a continued accrual of pension(without payment of premium). How much this is depends on the pension.

4. Households with a high mortgage

Is the mortgage on your own house larger than the value of the property? Then you risk a deficit in your pension.

5. Divorced people

After a divorce, the ex-partner is legally entitled to half of the old age pension accrued during the period of marriage. More than half of the divorced people are unaware of this is and / or do not consider this  in their plans for the future.

6. Lower incomes

Workers with low incomes are less interested in their pension and have less insight in their retirement arrangements.

7. 25- to 40-year olds

More than half of the Dutch population aged between 25 and 40 years never thinks about retirement. That means that most people of that age still have no idea about their pension. However, that is the best age to take action.

Did you possibly save for an adequate pension?

There is also a group of employees who accrue a more than adequate pension. In particular, workers with a full AOW pension, a supplementary pension and paid off an apartment for rent on their retirement.
