Driven and professional: with over eight years experience as the Chair of Astellas Pension Fund, Dirk Veenvliet knows his stuff. During an interview, he reflects on 2019 and looks to what the future might bring.
‘2019 was a fantastic investment year for our fund. We achieved a return of 18.8% on our investment portfolio. In 2018, this return was -0.5%. Unfortunately, the interest rate hit a historic low last year, which meant that our funding ratio only increased by a small amount. The funding ratio indicates how much money we have to have in reserve to be able to pay out all the pensions. It also shows whether it would be possible to award a pension supplement. The combination of a high return and a low interest rate made 2019 a special year.
