4: your former partner is entitled to part of your retirement pension. And vice versa.

Pension and divorce: avoid unpleasant surprises

If the person who has accrued pension dies, there will generally be a benefit payable to the surviving dependants (partner, former partner, children). But whether they actually receive it depends on the pension scheme. In some cases you accrue a 'piggy bank' (accrual-based) from which the benefit is paid. But if the surviving dependants' benefit is arranged as a type of insurance (risk-based), your former partner will receive nothing. Our fund's partner's pension is arranged as savings.
